Hosting provided by FotoTime Take a stroll back in time to pioneer Ontario, the liveliest town on the Kickapoo. Drawn by stands of huge white pines, hardy men and their families settled in the area to harvest timber and float it down the Kickapoo River to markets in Wisconsin and Illinois. Learn about the ravaging floods that nearly destroyed the village and Ontario's evolution from a lumber town to an economic center for area farmers to its current role as a gateway to canoeing and recreational opportunities at The Kickapoo Valley Reserve and Wildcat Mountain State park. Along the way you will meet eccentrics like Roscoe Johnson who refused to log his property and instead donated to the state park. You'll also meet Ed and Charles Lord, men of ambition, who turned the cottage industry of ginseng into a prosperous business. Ontario's most illustrious Civil War veteran and the subject of two books, J.P Sullivan also had a starring role in Ontario's history. Always The River reveals how a natural resource and people intertwine, sometimes at odds and sometimes in cooperation, to create a history of small town life in rural Wisconsin.
